Antibiotic resistance has become an increasing problem for health care providers. In the United States, 2012, some 1.6 million patients were hospitalized and 498,000 died from infections that were resistant to the commonly prescribed antibiotics. World Health Organization projects that by 2030, 10 million new cases of invasive infections will occur worldwide. The development of new antibiotic resistance genes and to existing drugs presents a public health crisis.
Table 4 presents data for 10 countries (Australia, Canada, France, Germany, Ireland, Italy, Mexico, New Zealand, Spain, United Kingdom) about the most effective and least antibiotics, on a quality-of-life basis, in the treatment of infections caused by gram negative (including Clostridium difficile) bacteria, excluding meticillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus bacteria. The quality of life rating was based on the percentage of patients who reported being treated with antibiotics according to WHO standards.

While there is an urgent need for better antibiotic treatments, there are also some promising new alternatives being evaluated. These include the combination of a conventional antibiotic with second type of antibiotic, or the use a different type of antibiotic in combination with a particular antibiotic. There are no approved new antibiotics in the pipeline.
